Found injured or orphaned wildlife?

Here is what to do in the next few minutes, and who to call. There is nothing on this page you need to pay for.

First: keep yourself and the animal safe

  1. Stay calm and keep your distance. Injured animals are frightened and can bite or scratch, even small ones.
  2. Keep pets and children away and keep noise low.
  3. Call the care line at (919) 555-0142, open 7am to 9pm daily, before you move the animal.

If you have been told to move it

  • Use a towel or gloves. Place the animal in a ventilated box with a soft cloth.
  • Keep it in a warm, dark, quiet room.
  • Don’t offer food or water. The wrong food can do harm.
  • Note where you found it, so it can be returned if it turns out to be healthy.

Baby animals that look abandoned

Fawns and many young birds are left alone on purpose while the parent forages. If there is no sign of injury, leave the animal where it is and call us for advice before you touch it.

Livestock and predator concerns

If wildlife is causing trouble on your land, our landowner team can visit, talk through options and help you apply for compensation programs. Ask for the landowner line when you call.
